History of the Gloriana Singers

The choir has been running for about 7 years, having started off as a day class at Manchester University with the emphasis on singing for enjoyment.

Several founder members are still in the choir, which numbers approximately 30 members. Glynn Davies, the musical director has been with the choir since the beginning.

 Musical Director

Glyn is a music graduate of the University of Manchester and the Royal Manchester College of Music, with Distinction in performance. A teaching qualification was followed by an appointment as head of music at a grammar school. This subsequently led on to a long career in higher education specialising in music. Whilst at Matlock College much choral experience was gained from John Clements, Sir Thomas Beecham’s Chorus master and he also found time to do a Masters in Music and get married and have a family.

Glyn specialised in accompaniment (with John Wills, RAM) piano playing (with Lucy Pierce, RMCM) and the organ, as well as conducting.

His time as assistant organist at St George’s, Stockport for 10 years was followed by other choral directorships – The Peak Singers (8 years) the Matlock College choir and orchestra (26 years) organist and choirmaster at Bakewell Parish Church (1982 to date) and the Peak Chamber Orchestra (1982 to date).

Glyn was the Music Tutor in the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Manchester for 14 years until 2007 and also taught at the Royal Northern College of Music. During this time he formed the Manchester Gloriana Singers and the Manchester Opera Lovers Group, both of which meet on Thursdays at the Union Chapel in Fallowfield, Manchester.
